Liam Strain

About:

Liam Strain had a long and distinguished career with the US National Park Service, where for many years he was an “historic interpreter”, responsible for sharing with visitors the meaning and importance of many places set aside by the American people because of their significance, like: Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island immigration center; Federal Hall, and many more. He eventually took the role of manager for a district of three historic sites - including Alexander Hamilton’s home, The Grange - for almost a decade. By the end of his career he had designed museum exhibits, school curricula, and outdoor panels as well as dozens of guided walks and talks on topics spanning 500 years of history.  Topics he’s explored during his career included the history and development of harbor defense in NYC; Theodore Roosevelt and his early life in Gilded Age NYC; civic unrest in NYC from the Stamp Act Riots to the Stonewall Uprising, as examples.

Today Liam takes elements from the topics and experiences he’s explored to share with his clients the exciting and fascinating American Revolution period in New York City. He discovered that despite a childhood education in NYC almost none of its importance to the politics or even military aspects of the Revolution there  were covered, and it was no surprise then that as he traveled he discovered that very, very few people from other places had any knowledge of New York’s pivotal role. The recurring notion for the vast majority of people he encountered was that the American Revolution “happened in Boston and Philadelphia”. Liam has therefore dedicated himself to broadening that understanding to include just how important NYC was in not just the development of the revolutionary cause throughout the 1760s and early 1770s, but the consistent influence and importance it played politically and militarily until the War’s end in 1783, up through  the ratification of the Constitution its role as the first capital of the United States under it, and the drafting of the Bill of Rights there.
